Cloud Hosting Uncovered

What is cloud hosting in fact? The word 'cloud' seems to be very trendy in today's IT, Internet and hosting parlance. However, only a select few really are informed about what cloud hosting is. Perhaps it is a smart idea to inform yourself about cloud hosting services. To make a quite long story concise, we will firstly let you know what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Restricted to a Remote Data Storage Only.

1. Offering a remote data storage solution, which involves one disk storage device for all customers, does not turn any particular service provider into a real cloud hosting corporation.

The cPanel hosting corporations dub the ability to distribute remote disk storage solutions a cloud hosting service. Up until now there is nothing bad about the cloud designation, but... we are discussing website hosting solutions, not remote file storage services for personal or corporate needs. There's invariably one "but", isn't there? It's not sufficient to name a shared hosting service, powered by a one-server web hosting environment, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" solution. This is so because the remaining parts of the entire hosting platform must be functioning in precisely the same way - this does not refer only to the remote data storage. The rest of the services entailed in the entire web hosting procedure also have to be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's very hard. Very few web hosting vendors can truly attain it.

2. It Encompasses Domains, Email Box Accounts, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, Hosting Control Panels, etc.

Cloud hosting is not limited to a remote data storage exclusively. We are discussing a web hosting service, serving numerous domains, online portals, email box accounts, etc., are we not?

To name a hosting service a "cloud hosting" one demands a lot more than providing plainly remote disk storage mounts (or perhaps servers). The mail server(s) need to be dedicated only to the e-mail linked services. Doing nothing else than these concrete tasks. There might be just one single or probably an entire cluster of mail servers, based on the total load created. To have a genuine cloud hosting service, the remote database servers should be performing as one, irrespective of their actual amount. Executing nothing different. The same goes for the clients' hosting Control Panels, the File Transfer Protocol, and so on.

3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) too.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of a real cloud hosting accounts provider will support multiple server farm facility locations on multiple continents.

Here's an example of a DNS of a true cloud hosting corporation:

dns1.gnethosting.net

dns2.gnethosting.net

If such a DNS is supplied by your hosting accounts provider, it's not a sure thing that there is a cloud web hosting environment in use, but you can definitely be sure when you perceive a Domain Name Server like the one beneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud hosting platform. This sort of DNS only indicates that the web hosting environment in use is one-single-server based. Probably it's cPanel. cPanel is a one-single-server web hosting platform and holds a market share of more than 98 percent. In cPanel's case, one physical machine copes with all web hosting services (web, electronic mail, DNS, databases, FTP, hosting Control Panel(s), files, etc.).

Remote File Storage - The Warped Interpretation of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting solution is not restricted exclusively to a remote disk storage service, as plenty of hosting suppliers wish it was. Unfortunately for them, if that was the case, most of the file web hosting service providers would have been referred to as cloud hosting ones a long time back! They are not classified as such, as they merely supply file web hosting solutions, not cloud web hosting solutions. The file hosting platform is really quite simple, when compared to the hosting platform. The remote file storage platform is not a cloud hosting platform. It cannot be, since it's simply one small part of the entire cloud web hosting platform. There's a lot more to be encountered in the cloud web hosting platform: the hosting Control Panel cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the FTP cloud, the electronic mail cloud and... in the foreseeable future, perhaps a couple of new clouds we presently are not informed about will appear out of the blue.
